MORE MARRIAGES AND DIVORCES LAST YEAR

Thu, Jun 17, 2010
mypaper

FOR the sixth year in a row, more couples tied the knot last year – but more also called it quits.

The number of marriages grew by 6 per cent, from 24,596 in 2008 to 26,081 last year. However, marriage rates dipped. Out of every 1,000 single men in the population, only 43.6 walked down the aisle last year, down from 43.9 in 2008.

The figure for women fell to 41.1 last year, from 41.9 in 2008.

Those who got married last year were older than couples who got hitched earlier. The
median age of marriage for men rose from 28.5 in 1999 to 29.8 last year, while that for women increased from 26 to 27.5.

The number of divorces and annulments grew by about 2 percent, from 7,220 in 2008 to 7,386 last year.

But the rate of divorces has remained fairly stable since 2005, with about two divorces
for every 1,000 residents.

RESPONSE:

Why do people get married and then after that get a divorce? Is that a trend now? Many couples are getting married later in age and many are also getting a divorce after a few years of marriage. I understand that career is everything to most of us here in Singapore and security at later age. Maybe this is due to the high cost of living in this country but I do not go for the idea that money is above everything.

Well I am not in any correct position to say this, but marriage is when two people get together because they already understand each other's character and love one another. So if that feeling fades halfway through the marriage then it should not have happened in the first place.

My parents are separated when I was ten. Let me tell you this. It does affect me in one way or another. It's not easy to cope with because for one thing,I am the eldest of four siblings. I am telling this, out of past experience, because I know exactly how it feels when you see both your parents are not living together. I have seen devastation and pain so I know.

For those married couple who has children, think before you decide on a divorce because you may not know the effects on your children. They may seem untaunted by the separation but deep inside there is a hole.

But anyway, my point is, don't get married if you separating later in future!!! Waste of time and money!
